Our Commitment: At Kazoku, we take your privacy seriously. This policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your personal information. We will never sell your data to third parties.

1. Information We Collect

1.1 Information You Provide

When you use Kazoku, we collect:

  • Account Information: Email address and username (via Google Sign-In)
  • Messages: The text messages you send to your AI family members
  • Memories: Information extracted from conversations that the AI remembers about you to maintain context
  • User Preferences: Settings and customization choices

1.2 Automatically Collected Information

  • Usage Data: How you interact with the app, features used, session duration
  • Device Information: Device type, operating system, app version
  • Log Data: IP address, crash logs, error reports

1.3 Voice Data (Pro Users)

For Pro subscribers who use voice message features, we generate audio responses using AI via ElevenLabs. Voice messages are stored temporarily and deleted after 30 days.

2. How We Use Your Information

We process your data based on the following Legal Bases: (a) Performance of a contract; (b) Our legitimate interests (app security/improvements); and (c) Your explicit consent.

  • Provide the Service: Generate AI responses, store memories, enable conversations
  • Personalization: Remember important details to make conversations more meaningful
  • Improve the App: Analyze usage patterns to enhance features and fix bugs
  • Process Payments: Manage subscriptions through Google Play Store
  • Customer Support: Respond to your questions and troubleshoot issues
  • Security: Protect against fraud, abuse, and unauthorized access
  • Legal Compliance: Comply with legal obligations and enforce our Terms

3. Third-Party Services

We use the following third-party services to operate Kazoku:

3.1 Authentication

  • Google Sign-In (Firebase): For secure account creation and login

3.2 AI and Processing

  • OpenAI (GPT-4): Powers AI conversations. We use the API, which generally does not use your data for model training by default.
  • ElevenLabs: Generates voice messages for Pro users

3.3 Payment Processing

  • Google Play Store: Handles all subscription payments
  • RevenueCat: Manages subscription status and entitlements

3.4 Infrastructure

  • Render.com: Backend hosting and database storage
  • PostgreSQL: Secure database for user data and messages

These services have their own privacy policies and are responsible for their data handling practices. We recommend reviewing their policies.

4. Data Sharing and Disclosure

4.1 We DO NOT Sell Your Data

We will never sell, rent, or trade your personal information to third parties for marketing purposes.

4.2 When We Share Data

We may share your information only in these circumstances:

  • With Your Consent: When you explicitly authorize us to share information
  • Service Providers: With third-party services listed above, necessary to operate the app
  • Legal Requirements: If required by law, court order, or government request
  • Safety and Security: To protect the rights, property, or safety of Kazoku or others
  • Business Transfers: In the event of a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets

5. Data Retention

  • Active Accounts: We retain your data as long as your account is active
  • Deleted Accounts: When you delete your account, all personal data, messages, and memories are permanently deleted within 30 days
  • Voice Messages: Automatically deleted after 30 days for all users
  • Log Data: Retained for up to 90 days for security and troubleshooting purposes

6. Data Security and Breach Notification

We implement industry-standard security measures to protect your data:

  • Encryption in transit (HTTPS/TLS)
  • Encryption at rest for stored data
  • Secure authentication (JWT tokens)
  • Regular security audits and updates

Data Breach: In the unlikely event of a security breach, we will notify affected users via the app or email within 72 hours of discovery. However, no method of transmission is 100% secure; we cannot guarantee absolute security.

7. Your Privacy Rights

Regardless of where you live, you have the right to:

  • Access Your Data: Request a copy of your personal information
  • Delete Your Data: Delete your account and all associated data through the app settings
  • Correct Your Data: Update or correct inaccurate information
  • Export Your Data: Request a portable copy of your conversations and memories
  • Opt-Out: Unsubscribe from marketing or AI training data sets

8. Children's Privacy

Kazoku is intended for users aged 13 and older (or the applicable age of digital consent in your jurisdiction). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under this age. If we discover we have, we will delete it immediately.

9. International Data Transfers

Your information may be transferred to and stored on servers located outside your country (e.g., in the USA). By using Kazoku, you consent to these transfers to countries that may have different data protection laws.

10. Cookies and Tracking

Kazoku does not use cookies for advertising. We only use essential technical cookies for session management. We do not currently respond to "Do Not Track" signals as there is no uniform standard.

11. Analytics

We collect aggregated, anonymized usage data to understand app performance. This data cannot be used to identify you personally.

12. AI and Machine Learning

Your conversations may be used to improve Kazoku's AI internal logic, but only in an anonymized and aggregated format. Personally identifiable information is removed first. You may opt-out of this at any time by contacting support.

13. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy. We will notify you of significant changes via an in-app notice. Your continued use after changes constitutes acceptance.

14. California Privacy Rights (CCPA/CPRA)

California residents have additional rights: the right to know, the right to delete, the right to opt-out of the "sale" or "sharing" of data, and the right to non-discrimination.

15. European Privacy Rights (GDPR)

EEA/UK users have the right to: access, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing, data portability, and the right to object to processing based on legitimate interests.
